Grand Canyon with Mom Day #7

Friday, May 1, 2009

What a surprise today was. We started off by eating breakfast at a restaurant across the street from the motel. After breakfast we headed to Four Corners. We arrived at Four Corners around 8:30 am local time, and it looked like we were the first visitors to arrive, or should I say customers.

We took the pictures of Mom standing in all four states. I think she got a kick out of that. While we were taking pictures, a guy walked up and asked if I could take his pictures on the monument. After I took his picture we started talking and I found out he is a refugee from Cuba. He is currently going to nursing school in Florida, and during his breaks he travels the USA.

After we left Four Corners we headed towards Shiprock, NM via US Hwy. 64. I have been on 64 before, but that was about 15 years ago. How I forgot how nice this road was is beyond me. From Farmington to Taos this is a very nice and scenic road.

At we neared Taos we had to climb into the mountains, and boy what a sight with all the snow that was still present. Mom and I never expected this, and it looked like we were in a winter wonderland. We stopped for a couple of pictures, but they do not really show how much snow is still on the ground. The pull out where I took the pictures has two entrances, I had to turn around to exit because one was still blocked with snow.

We arrived at Taos at around 3:00 pm local time. The town of the enlightened ones. We decided to check into the Sagebrush Inn, which turns out to be a very nice motel. The rooms are hugh, and the rate wasn't bad. We ate in the motel's restaurant. I had a steak, but it was nothing to be compared to Lytles in Abilene.

Tomorrow we continue to head south towards Amarillo. I'm going to run Mom by where the cars are buried in the ground. I forget what they call it, but its something to see anyway.
We will probably spend the night in Amarillo. Our plan for Sunday is to stop for a late lunch in Abilene and then head to Comanche, TX to spend the night. We should arrive back in Houston on Monday.

The plan is subject to change of course.
