Today the group went in two different directions. Yesterday we all planned to do the River Road, but this morning Doug informed us that he planned to hang around Fort Davis today and visit the fort. I gave this some thought, and for years I have passed of this historical fort and have never stopped to visit it. I made a major decision, I was also going to hang around Fort Davis and visit the fort. Dan and John also decided to do the same thing. The rest of the group continued on with their plan to ride the River Road.
We all had breakfast together at a local restaurant. The meal was good, though as expected expensive. The best part was the joke we played on Gary. Gary has a passion for grape jelly and toast at breakfast. Gary arrived at the restaurant a little after the rest of us, so that gave us time to arrange with the waitress to have here tell Gary they were out of grape jelly. The rest of us ordered grape jelly and we would spring it on him at the end of breakfast.
The waitress did an excellent job. The setup was classic and all we had to do was wait. Just as Gary was finishing breakfast I asked Jeff who was sitting at the same table as Gary if he wanted my grape jelly. Gary's head sprung up like it was on springs. He said the waitress said they were out of grape jelly. I told Gary that they wasn't out and in fact I had some. Gary at first didn't believe me and started arguing that I was just kidding. I bet him breakfast that I had grape jelly, but I guess Gary knows me to well, he was not foolish enough to bet. In the end we gave him the grape jelly. This may not seem funny to outsiders reading this, but for us in the group it was funny as hell.
After breakfast the other group headed south and we went back to the motel for few minutes until the fort opened. When we arrived at the fort we were about the only visitors there. It was interesting and you got to see how they lived in the late 1800's.
This is a picture of Doug marching to the bugle.
After we finished touring the fort we decided to go up to Davis Mountain State Park and check out the scenic views. This park is located about 3 or 4 miles outside of the Fort Davis, and it sits on top of what I guess you could call a mountain. The scenic views areas overlook the town of Fort Davis and surrounding area. It was really worth the trip up there.
After checking out the scenic views we decided to eat lunch in the Indian Lodge at the park. They had a buffet that consisted of chicken breast in reduced red wine sauce or stuffed bell peppers. They had several choices of sides and cake for desert. It was pretty darn good, and of course we all ate to much.
After lunch we returned to the motel and we all decided to take a afternoon nap, which led into evening. The rest of the group started showing up around 5, so it was time to break out the evening toddies. Some of us controlled ourselves, but there were a couple that didn't know when to quit. Since I am writing this report on the following day, I know for a fact that one had to head straight to the motel on Monday to get some additional rest. I wonder who that was. It was not me.
Tomorrow some of the group will head to Houston, the rest of us are heading to Rocksprings.
