BBFO 2010

Day 5 - Monday - February 1, 2010

The day started early as most of our days do, and everyone was up and packed by around 7:15 am.  Our plan was not to leave until 7:45, but since we were all packed and ready to go, wait, there is one missing.  OH, the youngster who wanted to stay up last night wasn't ready.  He looked like he has had a really rough night, so we waited until he finally loaded up.  We were able to depart around 7:30.  A group had left earlier headed back to Houston.  They had a bit of a drive so they left around 6 am.  There were 7 of us now.

We decided last night to eat in Marfa at Alice's Restaurant.  Doug and I ate there back in October and found the owner, who happens to be Alice to be quite amusing.  She is a one horse show, waitress, cook, server, and what ever else needs to be done. The ride to Marfa was cold, but nice.

After gassing up we headed over to the restaurant.  Alice took our orders and then headed back into the kitchen.  If you wanted more coffee or water, you were on your own to get it.  One at a time the meals were coming out.  Alice will put them in the window and yell out what is was.  By this time some help had arrived, who probably was Alice's daughter, and helped serve everyone.  All the meals came out and then there appeared Alice checking to see if everything was OK.  I called out, "hey Alice, your missing one" she had forgot my breakfast.  "Oh dear" she says, and heads back into the kitchen.  Five minutes later I had my breakfast.

The food is excellent at Alice's and the atmosphere is priceless.  After breakfast we headed east into the sun towards Sanderson.  The ride was cold but enjoyable.  We took a short break in Marathon where a couple of the guys picked up fresh fried pies at the local bakery.  We then headed east again to Sanderson.

At Sanderson we gassed up the bikes, and that is when our youngster decided to inform me that he couldn't hang with the group and was going to head straight to the motel.  I have him directions, and off he went.  I guess I was the only one he told that he was going ahead alone, because everyone else just looked at me wondering what was going on.  I just announced that the young man needed to go and get some beauty sleep.

While at Sanderson most of us decided to get some chicken strips to have for lunch at the Pecos River Bridge.  After everyone was gassed up and had their lunch packed we were back on the road headed east.  We rode to the Pecos River Bridge Overlook where we stopped and had lunch.  The weather was great, virtually no wind, but it was cold.  It was a quick lunch and we were off again.

We headed to Comstock where we turned north and backtracked the route some of us took Friday.  We made a couple to stops to take a break, and the weather improved, but the temperature never really increased.  It was pretty much a cold ride all day.  We did see some turkeys, skunks, cows, bunch of deer, and a few other critters that I probably forgot.

We arrived in Rocksprings around 4 pm and checked into the motel.  Our boy wonder was there, and it appeared the couple of hours sleep he got, made him one with the world again.  After a couple of drinks we ate at a local restaurant where the food turned out to be OK.  We then returned to our rooms, had a nightcap, and called it a night.

Tomorrow the weather doesn't look to good, so were taking a direct route back to Houston.
