BIG BEND TEXAS - APRIL, 2010

Tuesday, April 20, 2010 - Day 3

We were up a bit before daylight, so we decided to head across the street to grab a sausage biscuit to hold us over until we eat breakfast in Marathon. Daylight came around 7 or so and by 7:30 we were loaded and headed to breakfast.

Marathon is about 50 miles from Sanderson, so we had a little bit of a drive today. The weather was cool and foggy. As were were heading west we observed some great views of some distance small mountains highlighted by the sun, but was under the canvas of the rising fog. I took a bunch of pictures, but they just don't do justice to what we actually saw.

We arrived in Marathon around 8:30 and decided to eat at a small restaurant located on the main drag. Actually there is only one drag in this one horse town, and the restaurant we decided to go to was the only one in town. I can't remember the name of the place, but you will be able to find it if you ever travel here, it's the only one with an “open” sign.

After breakfast we headed south on US 385 towards Big Bend National Park. By this time the fog had lifted, and it was a beautiful sunny day with a few lazy clouds. We arrived at the park and found out this is a get in free week to all the national parks. That was a bonus, we didn't have to pay to get in.

About 10 miles from the entrance of the park, John decided it was time for a break.  We were really roughing it.

After our break we headed to Panther Junction where we gassed up.  It was now approaching lunch time, so we headed to Study Butte where we at at the Fina Station located at the junction of 118 and 170.  John and I have both eaten here a number of times before.
After lunch we headed west on 170, (The River Road) which is considered one of the most scenic roads in Texas, and possibly the number 1 motorcycle road in Texas. The road runs along the Rio Grande River and is full of twist, turns and hills. A great road to ride, and the scenery isn't bad either.

At the highest point on this 70 mile stretch of road we stopped for another one of those chair breaks. We stayed a while, but the temperature has risen significantly and we decided it was time to head to Presidio and check in to out motel.

We arrived at the motel (Ritia Inn) and checked in. This is a nice motel, but they do not have ice, so the manager, who lives on site, was kind enough to give us some out of her ice machine. Once at the room we unoaded and made a couple of social drinks. We decided were going to order delivery pizza tonight.

This was a great day of riding. This is the way all rides should be.

Tomorrow we head to Del Rio or maybe back to Uvalde.
