BIG BEND TEXAS - APRIL 2010

Wednesday, April 21, 2010, Day 4
Thursday, April 22, 2010, Day 5

I have to learn to finish these trip blogs in a more timely manner.  I am going to combine the last two days into one report.

One of our morning view on Highway 67 heading north towards Marfa

Same Highway, just a different direction.

Day 4

We were up and on the way by 7:30 AM.  Our plan was to head north on US 67 to Marfa and have breakfast at Alice's.  Alice's has sort of become a traditation when traveling in this part of the country.  Alice's is a small cafe located in Marfa that is run by an older Hispanic women who happens to be named Alice.

Doug and I first found this place a couple of years ago and I remember during our first visit the local nuns and priest were also having breakfast there.  I remember that every time one of the nun's walked into the restaurant they made the rounds and greeted each and every customer.  Alice has a special table setup at the front of the restaurant that has a "reserve" sign on it, and I am pretty sure this is the special table for the nun's and priests.

Alice is a character.  She takes your order without the need of a menu pad, and your order come out western style, one at a time.  Sometimes they get the orders right and sometimes they don't.  The food is good here, and you can't beat the price.  John and I both had the kitchen sink omelets with hash browns and the bill for each of us came out to a whooping $5.00 or so.

After breakfast we headed east on Old Highway 90.  The ride was scenic but uneventfull.  Just before Sanderson they had the road closed due to qualification runs they were making for a road race they were going to have out here on Saturday.  We were delayed for about 30 minutes or so, aftwards which we continued east on 90.

We took our next break at Langtry, the home of Judge Roy Bean, Law West of the Pecos.  John and I both picked up some new maps, and checked out a home made trike.  I wish I would have taken a picture of  this thing.  It was 21 feet long with a Oldsmobile engine and a GoldWing front end.  As John said it must take 40 acres to turn this thing around.

After our break in Langtry we continued on to Del Rio.  We stopped for lunch in some hole in the wall taco place, and though we were not expecting much, it turned out they had some great tacos and beans.  After lunch it was a short ride to the same motel in Uvalde that we stayed in on the ride out.

Dinner was at the local Sonic which we carried back to the room.

Thursday, Day 5

No pictures today, jus the ride home.  We took the more direct route, which is east on US 90 to San Antonio and the I-10 towards Houston.  At Waelder we jumped off the interstate and took old US 90.  At Columbus we jumped down onto 90A via FM 112 and after a lunch stop in East Bernard, we headed to the house.  I think I arrived home around 2 PM.

It was a great trip, couldn't ask for better weather, scenery and company.
