Devils Tower

Tuesday, May 4, 2010 - Day 7

We were up at our normal time.  We had breakfast at the motel, and then gassed up the van before heading out of town.  I like taking the back roads so we decided to take Highway 14 instead of going down to the interstate.  The road is very scenic with a mixture of farm and pasture lands.  There are numerous small lakes, and the color of the water is black as coal.  We pretty much figured this is because of the black farm dirt this area is famous for.

While driving, we came upon the Ingalls homestead.  I believe this is the childhood home of Laura Wielder(SP?).

We decided to stop and take a look at the place.  It was cold and windy, but we braved it any way.  We first went to the Visitor Center and this is what greeted us;

We will not be deterred, braving the cold and wind we, well some of us, took a look around   Some others decided to go back to the van.

The place is basically a recreation of a late 1800's home site.  It is basically a walking tour, and though interesting, I was not interested enough to walk around the entire place.  They did have and old school house, and in front were a couple of horses and wagons.  Mom said in her blog they were mules, so I took another look at the pictures and I think they were horses.  What the hell, it was cold and they were four legged animals that pulled a wagon.  There were a couple of school buses at the visitor center, so I think some school class was having a field trip.

After our brief stop we continued on some byways and back-ways to Mitchell, SD.  Our next stop is the Corn Palace.

We arrived around 12:30 PM and found the place, which is located in downtown Mitchell.  Parking wasn't a problem, but to say the least I was a little bit disappointed.  I was sort of expecting this;

But this is what we found

Nothing like is was in the past ages.  For my motorcycle friends they did have this;

We took a look around, snapped a few pictures, had a pretzel and the  headed west.

Our next destination is the Wall Drug Store in Wall, SD.  We plan on spending the night in Wall and visiting the place in the morning.  The only way there was the Interstate unless we wanted to go a bit out of the way, but it was starting to get a bit late so we took the Interstate.  This is pretty much what we saw the entire way to Wall.

We arrived in Wall around 4:00 PM local time.  We checked into the Best Western and decided to have Subway for dinner.  After a couple of social drinks for me, and some computer lessons for Jane and Mom, we called it a night.
Tomorrow we plan on visiting the Badlands and Crazy Horse.
