Devils Tower

Wednesday, May 5, 2010 - Day 8

The day started with breakfast at the famous Wall Drug Store.  Jane was up early, so we all just pretty much followed her lead.  The Wall Drug Store covers about a city block and is basically one big tourist trap.  They have just about every trinket that you can imagine.  Beyond that they are still a drug store where you can get a prescription filled.

We hung around the drug store for a couple of hours looking at all the stuff they had to sell, but in the end they didn't have anything Liz and I were interested in.  Mom and Jane did manage to find a few items to drop a little cash on.

From the drug store it is a short drive to the Badlands National Park.  We took a slow scenic drive through the park with a stop at the Visitor's Center to watch their short film about the place.  It was a good film, and the scenery was excellent.

After the park we drove to Rapid City, SD where we gassed us and ate lunch at a Chinese Restaurant.  The food was pretty good.  From there we headed for the famous four heads.

We discussed wheather we wanted to go into the park, but all of us have been there except Liz.  Liz told us that she didn't want to do a lot of walking around, so we moved on to Crazy Horse.

Our plans were to visit Crazy Horse because Jane has never been there.  When we pulled up to the entrance we found out the entrance fee would be $27.00.  I was pulling out my walled to pay the fee when Jane and my Mom both said, "no way".  Neither of them felt it was worth the money to just visit the Visitor Center.  From the roadway you can clearly see the monument, and Jane was able to get some pictures, so after some more discussion it was decided that the money just wasn't worth it.  I also felt the entrance fee was a bit ridiculous, but was willing to pay since Jane has never visited there.  I have been there a couple of times before, but on a bike the fee is only $10.00.

We turned around and headed to Custer for the night.  This is where I found out I screwed up.  I made, what I thought were reservations in Custer, but it turned out I had made reservations in a motel in nearby Hot Springs.  The problem is Hot Springs is in the oppsited direction we are going tomorrow.  I called the motel and even though we are passed their cancel deadline, we worked out a deal, and we found another motel in Custer.

Tomorrow we head to the Devils Tower, but who knows, as I am typing this it is snowing outside.
