Devils Tower

Thursday, May 7, 2010 - Day 9

We woke up this morning with about 2 inches of snow on the ground.  At this point it was not accumulating on the road, but that was to change later on.  When I first went outside it wasn't snowing, but by the time we started loading the van it was coming down pretty hard.  We finally had the van loaded and come hell, high water or snow, we were going to see Devil's Tower.

We decided to drive a bit before we had breakfast.  The further we drove the heavier the snow was.  The snow plows were out in full force.  I was a bit nervous at times, since I haven't driven in snow in the last 30 years, but in the end we made it.

We drove up to Deadwood, but was unable to find a restaurant that suited out taste.  We continued on towards Spearfish Canyon where we found a small restaurant that served an excellent breakfast.  It was more a brunch, but at least we found a place.  After breakfast we continued up through Spearfish Canyon into the city of Spearfish.

In Spearfish we stopped at a Safeway to restock, and then we continued on to the Devil's Tower.  We made it to Devils Tower just after lunch time.  It was still snowing off and on, but the sight of the tower was and still is impressive.

After visiting the tower, we started heading south.  This was our turn around point so we are now headed slowly back to Tennessee.  We ended up for the night in a small town named Newcastle, WY.  We had dinner at the attached restaurant and called it a night.

Tomorrow we head for Omaha, Nebraska so mom can visit her mother and fathers grave sites.  It will take us a couple of days to get there, and we plan to stop along the way at any sites we may come upon.
