After a night in the thriving metropolis of Thedford. we had a crappy continental breakfast and headed out. Today will be a transit day, and as expected there was not much to see. We were out of the sand hills, and the scenery changed to vast plowed corn fields.
The road went on and on and on. I liked western Nebraska, the area is very scenic, but eastern Nebraska just plains sucks.
We just kept driving east until we arrived at the small communtiy of Winslow. After my Grandmother passed away, this is where my Grandfather moved to. Mom said on the way there, the town only has two bars and a post office, and after arriving it still has only two bars and a post office.
My Grandfather had a small sawmill where he made pallets. I stayed with him a couple of times when I was very young, and the trailer he lived in is still there today, though not in very good condition. The sawmill burnt down many years ago, but some of the foundation is still visible.
After vistiing Winslow we drove two miles to Hooper where we decided to have a light lunch at the Iron Horse.
With this group I am traveling with, if what we ate was a light lunch, I sure hate to see what a heavy lunch is. The Iron Horse serves two purposes in this small communtiy. It is the local drinking hole as well as the local restaurant.
After lunch we headed to Decatur where my Grandfather is buried. We visited the grave site for a short time, and the decided to call it a night in the small town of Onawa, IA. Onawa is located just across the river from Decatur.
Tomorrow we head down to Omaha.
