| TAKEN SOME TIME DURING THE EARLY 1990'S. MY BIKE IS THE GOLD YAMAHA VENTURE |
It is that time of year again, we are getting ready for the Big Bend Freeze Out 2011. Many years ago I was looking for a place to ride in the winter time. Even though we pretty much have year around riding here in TeXas, we are still limited to where we can go in January.
Some time in the late 1980's I decided to take a trip to Big Bend National Park, located in the southwest part of TeXas. Though I don't remember the exact year, I do remember the ride. I like to froze my arse off. I started learning some valuable lessons that year, Walmart jackets do not make good winter riding jackets, and $20.00 winter gloves won't cut it in below 30 degree temperatures.
I survived the trip, and it was the start of many more. I have not missed a January trip to Big Bend since. Over the years others decided to join in the fun, and I have seen a number of times riders have turned around and went home because of the cold.
Now in the second decade of the 21st Century, riding out there in January is no big deal. Heated clothing, and riding gear specific for cold weather riding has been improved to the point that you can stay as warm on the bike as you would in a car.
This year we are leaving on Thursday, January 27, 2011 and will return on Tuesday. It is a short trip, and if it is like the trips in years past it ought to be a blast. This year there will be ten of us. I plan to try and blog during the trip, but sometimes the internet connections out there are something to be desired, so if I can not blog nightly, I will catch up when I return home.
