Day 2 - Friday - January 29, 2010
We woke up to a cold wet morning. The temperature really dropped overnight, and thunder storms rolled through for most of it. No matter, I slept like a baby.
We decided to eat breakfast at a restaurant that is located across the street from the motel. It was not much of a decision since it was till raining, and none of us really wanted to leave in the rain. We have eaten at this restaurant a number of times and as usually it was pretty good. It is a family owned restaurant and we have had the same waitress for several years. I guess we are spending to much time in Camp Wood because she actually remembered us.
By 8:00 am the rain had stopped, but it was still pretty wet. We decided to head out anyway, but with the temperature in the mid thirties, it promised to be a cold one. I was able to get a hold of BrIan on the phone and found out they were in Schulenberg eating breakfast.
We headed out of town on Highway 55 north towards Rock Springs. We need to top off our tanks in Rock Springs, because between there and Comstock there is no gas. It was a casual ride, but it was, as expected, a cold ride. At the end of 55 we turned onto a FM 189 and headed towards Juno. Juno is listed on the town as a map, but don’t be fooled, the only thing there is a couple of run down houses, and I’m not even sure anyone is even living in them.
We did stop on 189 and took a break, there wasn’t really any place to pull over, so we just stopped along the side of the road. The boys had to get rid of their coffee if you know what I mean. The entire time we were there not one single car passed by. This is what I love about West Texas, the desolation and lack of populace make for a very enjoyable ride.
It was still cold after the break, and my electrics were running on high. This is deer country, and of course I was on the lookout for them, and to no surprise I saw a couple. I think they were the scouting party trying to get my location to let their kin folks in the Big Bend know I am headed that way. One of the deer was on the side of the road, and as I approached he/she looked up and me and just stared. When I was about 50 feet way, he/she then decided to head off into the brush.. Just one more bold deer in West Texas.
When we reached FM 163 we turned south towards Comstock.. It was till cold, but it had turn sunny and was working out to be a beautiful day We took another break at a historical marker on 163, but it was still too cold to sit around. We continued south on 163 and arrived in Comstock around noon time.
Our original plan was to eat lunch at the Pecos River Bridge, but it was still pretty cold and the wind was really blowing, so we decided eat at a restaurant in Comstock. This is unusual because there is usually not a open restaurant in this small town. The meal turned out to be pretty good, I had the Hamburger Steak, that’s a shocker, and everyone else had the daily special which was Chicken and Dumplings. They all said it was pretty good to.
While at lunch I was able to contact BrIan again and found out they were in Uvalde. That put them about a 100 miles behind us, so it will still be some time before they caught us. After lunch we decided to head down to Langtry, which is Judge Roy Beans, Law West of the Pecos, place and wait for them there.
Side not to mom, you will remember this place, or maybe you won’t, this is where you saddled up next to the bar on our Grand Canyon trip.
We pulled out the chairs and there we waited for a couple of hours for the other group to arrive. The day was beautiful, but is was still on the cool and windy side. The boys arrived around 3:15, and after some small talk we headed to Sanderson.
Once in Sanderson we checked into the motel, and for the most part it was toddy time. We were still waiting for some other to arrive which they did in groups of two’s and three’s. When it came to dinner time everyone sorted did their own thing, Dick and cooked some sausage that we brought along, some other went down to the local restaurant, while some ordered some delivery pizza, and a couple even went across the street to the truck stop and got a burger.
After our respected dinners, we were all pretty tired, so after another drink or two we headed to our rooms. It was to cold to sit outside any way.
Tomorrow we head down into t he park.
Sorry for no pictures, but I have some crappy internet connections, so I will try to add some in later.
