Devils Tower

Friday. May 8, 2010 - Day 10

We left at a later time this morning.  I don't think we left until after 8:00 AM, which is a late start for us.  Before leaving Newcastle we gassed up, and the weather was still looking a bit crappy.  We still were having snow flurries, and there was a killer north wind.  While gassing up I had to put on a jacket, which is unusual for me.

Leaving Newcastle we headed south to Lusk, where we stopped at a run down truck stop to have breakfast.  There were a bunch of cars in front of the place, so it is either a good place to eat, or we are going to be eating with some stupid people.  Turned out it was an excellent place to eat.
From Lusk we headed east into Nebraska.  We were soon in the rolling sand hills of western Nebraska, and this is definitely cow country.  The grasslands stretched as far as the eye could see.  I have never ridden in this part of Nebraska, and I also felt this would be a boring ride, but I plan to return up here on a motorcycle some day soon.  This would be an excellent place to tour on the bike.

Just inside of Nebraska we stopped Crawford and did some much needed laundry.  After finishing the laundry we headed east on scenic Highway 2.  We drove through vast grasslands,  rolling hills, passing through small town after small town.

We decided to call it a night in Thedford, NE at the Roadside Inn.  A nice motel, but its not like we had a choice.  Next door to the motel was a new restaurant which had a sign stating "fine dining".  We decided to check it out, and it turned out for Mom, Liz and I to be one of the best meals we have had on the trip.  The three of us ordered the Chicken Fried Steak, but Jane ordered the grilled chicken, and even though she said it was good, I don't think she was impressed with it.

Tomorrow we head to Omaha by way of Decatur, to visit my Grandfather's grave site.  Our plan is to have a big Omaha steak tomorrow night.
